This may sound strange, but the first thing I would like to do is apologize to everyone reading this. My intent was to have this site completely up and running by the first of January. Obviously, this did not happen. For that, I apolgize. Through some fault of my own and some fault of Mother Nature, there were "real life" obstacles that got in the way of publishing the site by that date and since that date. In addition, the amount of information is overwhelming. There are around 150 Division 2 schools that sponsor football. There are around 280 that sponsor men’s basketball. Collecting and organizing that vast amount of information in addition to building the site were goals that were much too ambitious in that short period of time. I should have started during the football season but I underestimated the amount of time it would take to make it all happen. All that said - the site is here now. When I started D2Football.com, I had two goals. First, I wanted Division 2 to seem like a bigger, more important place. While we cannot expect to see our games on ESPN on a daily basis and ESPN Gameday will never grace our campuses, I don’t feel too arrogant in saying that Division 2 does seem like a bigger place than it did previous to the 2000 season. No longer are fans guessing about who their next opponent is or where they are from. They have heard of the best players on teams they have never seen play. Basically, if they want to know almost anything about Division 2 Football, they have a place to find that information I also know from my interaction with coaches I trust and former players I trust, that D2Football.com did succeed in making D2 seem bigger and more important. The second goal I had when I started D2Football.com was to build loyalty among graduates of D2 institutions. For instance, if someone graduates from Humboldt State, it was my goal that their "team" would be HSU, not the USC Trojans. Likewise, if someone graduates from Grand Valley, I hope Division 2 attendance was at an all-time high last year. Although the vast majority of the credit goes to the schools that build the loyalty in their alumni, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that D2Football.com has helped, at least minimally, in that area as well. I hope to do the same thing with the creation of D2Hoops.net. I hope to do many of the same things we do on D2Football.com. If possible, it would be great to have columnists that give analysis and opinion about each conference. We will have a scoreboard, although I think even attempting to maintain "live scores" on game days would be futile. Of course, we will provide links to information, links to webcasts, etc. There is even information on the site that is not displayed yet. While I think it’s fair to say that I’m an expert when it comes to Division 2 Football, the same cannot be said about Division 2 Basketball. I would rate my knowledge as fair. I would be more than happy to listen to any advice and take any suggestions. In fact, I encourage it. Don’t be afraid to contact me with any ideas or any desires to become involved. Brandon Misener |
